The reader knows about the devastating effects of asbestos, the betrayal of the WWI treaty, the alliance between Hitler and Mussolini before the characters, and yet watching them deal with these issues within the narrative of their lives, is so interesting. Extremely well researched, but the book is not as engaging as I'd hoped. This was something I picked up because of its cover. Readers also enjoyed. Talese begins to understand who he is and where he comes from, piecing together for us an immigrant saga of a familiar sort that is nevertheless interesting, enlightening and occasionally quite moving.
Worth the time.
